Missing Home

Soundtrack: Home by Machine Gun Kelly

I am missing New Jersey this time of year. I miss being able to hop on the train, go straight into Penn Station and go see the tree, ice skaters, rich people shopping, buying $300 thin scarfs and making fun of them with my pop. I also miss haggling in China town, getting over priced coffee at the McDonald’s in Times Square and fully taking in the cold and the people. There is no way I can ever fully explain what it is like in NYC. You’d just have to see it.

My mother would lock herself in the basement to wrap presents and yell at us if she heard the door even try to open. She’d make these little tree shaped cakes that were out of this world. She says that it is my turn to get the tree cake pans (Now I feel like an adult). Being married, working full time, having my own home, I love every second of it, but I miss the tradition. It is time to make my own I guess.

Since I’m a nurse, I am working Christmas Day. I haven’t been home for Christmas since 2010. Everyone will be in NJ, I already shipped everyone’s gifts. We’ll Skype on Christmas eve and at least I’ll be here with my grandparents. I miss going to my aunt’s every Christmas eve, having a giant meal, desserts, coffee, laughter. We were in such a hurry to grow up and move away, now I’m wishing I had stayed a kid longer.

What is your family tradition? I’d like to know!

P.S I got that job I interviewed for! I’ve been at it for about a month and a half. It is not bad working 5 days a week, but I miss being in patient care.

  1. I tell my boys that very thing, frequently. Enjoy being a kid, for as long as you can. Adulting isn’t all it’s cracked up to be sometimes, is it? I’m in healthcare too, an Occupational Therapist. There’ll be therapists working Christmas Day. I opted to do Christmas Eve instead. Bleh. 😕😃
